IES Detroit October Meeting: Light + Sound

This talk, prepared especially by Zackery Belanger for the IES Detroit Section, will cover the historic and inevitable path that brought acoustics and lighting together. It will clarify some core concepts in acoustics, and how it influences the design and placement of light fixtures. Visually-striking simulations will be displayed in Zackery’s studio Arcgeometer, to illustrate how sound moves and works. This discussion will build upon Zackery’s virtual presentation held January 2024.

Meeting Location: Our event will be held at Arcgeometer in Detroit. 1111 Bellevue St suite 360. The building was designed by Albert Kahn. There is ample street parking outside of the studio. You will be directed to the suite once inside the building.

About the presenter:
Zackery Belanger is an expert in acoustic architecture who specializes in form and material. He has consulted on hundreds of projects, and is a prolific speaker on the current state and future of acoustics. He is the author of the essay Acoustic Ornament, which argues for 
consideration of “non-acoustic” surfaces and objects. In 2017 he founded the Detroit-based studio Arcgeometer, and has been deeply involved in the recent merging of acoustics into lighting.
