Lighting and the Internet of Things @ Otus Supply

Smart, Intelligent, IoT Ready, connected are all the lighting buzz words going around and everyone has a little different spin. This talk will explore the topic of “Smart” lighting. It will take a look at the different wireless protocols, discuss the idea of decentralized control, content delivery and share some case studies where smart lighting has been implemented. Interoperability continues to be the goal but many systems remain closed. This talk will explore where interoperability is happening and how it is being done.

About the Presenter: Ron Steen
Ron is a veteran in the LED application space. He first started playing with LEDs in 1995 while working as an engineer at General Motors and is credited with bringing the first LED Tail lamp to market on the 2000 Cadillac DeVille and subsequently started pioneering the LED headlamp. Since making the jump to general lighting in 2004 with Philips as Director of LED Systems and Drivers, Ron continued to stay at the forefront of LED adoption. In his role as VP of Business Development for Xicato Ron has been a driving force to change the LED dialog from Lumens per Watt to Quality of Light and is now focused on exploring the world of connected lighting.

Where is the love? A lighting design round table discussion…. @ Greektown Casino-Hotel

Please join the IES Detroit Section for an engaging panel discussion examining the process of lighting design, from initial concepts through construction to post-occupancy. From the unique perspectives of an architect, lighting designer, electrical engineer, and manufacturer’s representative, our moderated panel will discuss the ins and outs of architectural lighting design projects, touching on design, procurement, installation, commissioning, and final focus.

Our distinguished panel features the following design professionals:

  • Lindsey Stefaniak is a vice president and electrical engineer at Peter Basso Associates
  • Keith Irtenkauf is an executive director and lighting designer at Illuminating Concepts
  • Laura McRandall is a specifications sales consultant at Gasser Bush Associates
  • John Skok is a principal at Mcintosh Poris Associates Architects

IES Detroit 2019 Product Show @ Burton Manor

The Annual IES Detroit Lighting Product Show is the “must attend” event of our calendar year. Featuring 120 lighting exhibitors, there will be something to see for everyone. This is your chance to see the latest trends and developments in the lighting industry. Lighting Designers, Architects, Interior Designers, Specifiers, Electrical Engineers, Electrical Contractors, and Distributors are all encouraged to attend.

The trade show features plenty of food and several open bars to enjoy through the evening.

Also be sure to come and buy a raffle ticket at the door for your chance to win great prizes donated by our exhibitors and the IES Detroit Section.

Early Bird ticket sales end Friday, March 15th. Starting March 16th, the ticket price rises to $40. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door with cash or credit card. Student tickets are $10, please present valid Student ID at the door.

Lighting Controls Panel Discussion @ Stone Terrace at Big Rock Chophouse

Please join the IES Detroit Section for a panel discussion on lighting controls and the lighting design process. Lighting controls are increasingly mandated for code compliance, but the flexibility and functionality they give to a space can also be desired by the end user. Whether lighting controls are implemented out of a necessity or client need, all too often they are little more than an afterthought during the design process. Our moderated panel will discuss the state of lighting controls, and how to better consider lighting controls during the design process.

Our distinguished panel features the following professionals:

  • Jeff Bodway is an electrical engineer at Osborn Engineering
  • Chris McRae is a controls manager at Gasser Bush Associates
  • Nick Furgason is an electrical engineer at IDS
  • Steve Wellein is a project manager at Ferndale Electric

Detroit Opera House Tour @ Detroit Opera House
May 14 @ 5:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Please join the IES Detroit Section for a tour of the historic Detroit Opera House, and hear from the theatrical lighting and production professionals that make the magic happen. The tour will include backstage areas not accessible to the public, and we will get a chance to talk with Dan Brinker, Technical Director; Heather DeFauw, Assistant Lighting Designer/Assistant Technical Director; and Kevin Neuman, Assistant Technical Director.

We will meet in Detroit Opera House parking lot lobby. Glass doors to the lobby will be open, and the lobby also includes a timeline display and showcase that highlights the history. After the tour, we will have dinner and drinks at Vicente’s Cuban Cuisine, a four-minute walk from the Opera House.

There is a Tiger’s game that evening, so please plan accordingly to make it on time for the tour. Parking is FREE at the Detroit Opera House surface lot. Enter the gated lot from John R Street, and tell the attendant you are there for a tour. We can leave our vehicles there while we dine at Vicente’s.

As always, professional education is paramount, with a broad selection of CEU credits available through participation at the conference.

This expansive theme relates to numerous aspects of how light and darkness affect our vision, health, behavior and experience. The objective of the conference is to provide educational sessions and experiences relevant to the audience of lighting professionals, academics, and peripheral design disciplines. This year’s theme is bringing focus to the powerful interrelationships between light affects and light effects. In addition, the Conference program will also consist of technical papers and posters on a wide range of lighting-related topics.

The IES Street & Area Lighting Conference is the only conference of its kind dedicated to improving the outdoor lighting business of electric utilities and energy service companies.
